Keeping a balance (Year 7 & 8)
Outline We are encouraged to identify stressors in our own lives and establish strategies to maintain a balanced lifestyle. Pubertal change is discussed especially the changes in the brain and the effects that some substances may have on the growing body. With the use of PAT, our Pull Apart Torso, body parts and systems are explored, enabling students to gain a greater depth of understanding about how their own body functions and why it is important to care for it. With the drug focus we will explore a variety of drugs and the effects that they can have on the human body (particularly the maturing body), looking at both short term and long term effects. Key messages:
When we are in balance we better able to enjoy life, avoid unnecessary stress and learn better
Our bodies and brains are amazing and need to be cared for

2. find out the effects of commonly abused drugs in New Zealand
Successful Learning will look like… children can name long and short term effects of these drugs on the human body
3. extend our knowledge about the brain and the systems that function in the body
Successful Learning will look like… children correctly naming body parts and the systems they belong to

4. understand that the human body is constantly working internally to stay in balance
Successful Learning will look like… children stating simple changes that the body makes in order to stay balanced and ways that this balance that can be affected
